Huailai County has a typical continental climate, with long, cold and dry winters. It enjoys long hot summers and relatively short spring and autumn seasons.

The coldest months are January and February, with the lowest temperatures reaching as far down as -22°C. The hottest month by contrast is July with temperatures reaching as high as 35-38°C. September and October benefit from mild weather, which allow the grapes hanging on the vines to reach the optimum and desired level of maturity.

The average annual rainfall of 358 millimeters which is less than half of that of Beijing makes Huailai County a dry area and makes irrigation necessary during the grape growing season.

Huailai County is protected from the last of the monsoon rains by the surrounding mountains, which act as a natural barrier.

As the average fluctation in temperature during the course of the day is 15°C during the grape maturation period, this allows the grapes to concentrate the colour and tannins in the grape. Long cool nights allow a slow ripening process, which is extremely beneficial to the character of the resulting wines.
